Repressed Memory Lane is about Adam Rozenbachs' awkward childhood that he’d rather forget. Bad acne, braces, a serious undercut mullet and, unsurprisingly, bad luck with girls plagued his youth. While Rozenbachs' amusing but not especially cutting-edge tortured teen stories feature substantially in the show, they are only part of a mixed bag of material which includes Lara Bingle, the difficulty in unclasping bras, unattractive suburban swingers, caving in Laos and drinking concentrated cordial. Most of it is fairly mundane stuff, presented in a blokey, casual style with the word “like” peppering every sentence many times over. More precise delivery might elevate the jokes to a little higher than ordinary.
Still, Rozenbachs seems like a friendly enough guy and Repressed Memory Lane suits the pub-like, mainstream environs of the Portland Hotel. The show is not a hard hour to sit through - there are laughs to be had - but it’s not very challenging either. Like a fast food meal, it does the job of filling up, but it is light on the lasting nutrition.
